I listened to the new Guantanamo Baywatch song “Love This Time” four or five times on repeat and then I wrote this thing below. They may or may not be related.

It’s like swimming in the ocean in the fall, she says. When the water is so stabbingly cold it feels like a beginning, and you can’t go only halfway, you have to keep walking and walking until the water is above your shoulders and your toes have trouble finding the ground and the bright orange beacon is closer than the sand. You leave everyone behind because they don’t matter anymore, nothing matters but the cold and the tide and feeling, and you swim.  The feeling is belonging; your place is in that ocean and nowhere else, the ocean sees you, the ocean is everywhere. You float near the top of the foam of a passing wave, staring up at the sky, serene and buoyant. And then the tides turn, and a big, strong wave tumbles over you, filling your lungs with seawater.  It’s like being in a rip-tide, she says, wincing a little as if the memory is as salty and suffocating as the metaphor. The waves keep coming and coming, and it seems like the only way out is down, to succumb, to drown. And just for a moment, that seems okay. But then the roughness of the water pushes you past surrender and blurry-eyed and breathless, you fight your way back to shore. And that’s where we all are in the in-between times, she says, picking up a handful of sand. Here on the beach, seeing the sea, knowing that we will go back in again, and again, and again.

Listen to the song, which will be released on a split EP with Natural Child via Suicide Squeeze on Dec. 3, below:
